Get paid to do what you love to do

(NC)—The famed Chinese philosopher Confucius said that if you choose a job you love, you will never have to work a day in your life. The challenge, however, may be figuring out just how to get paid for what it is you love to do. Denise Richard, the Chair of Immigrant Education at George Brown College, says reaching the goal of having a career you love is very possible.

A first step, is determining what kind of job you will love most – to get there Richard suggests following three steps:

1. Assess who you are and what you love to do, generally. Look at what you enjoy doing in your spare time, examine past working experiences and list what you liked and didn't like. Be honest – for instance, if you don't like people, a career in retail is probably a bad idea.

2. Make a list of the limiting factors in your life. Do you have a family to support? Are certain jobs ruled out because of where you live? (The opportunities to be a farmer in downtown Toronto are few, for example.)

3. Use the various tests, readily available online, that can direct you to the kind of professions best suited to your needs and personality. Such tests are usually quite accurate, and very helpful.

Once you've got a clear sense of what you love to do, what your limits are, and what professions you're suited for, you can begin to research those professions. After that point it's just a matter of getting the necessary qualifications, and then you're well on your way to doing a job you love.
