(NC)—The annual ritual of spring cleaning likely extends into your home office and though mopping up dust bunnies and reorganizing filing cabinets may be your first inclination, don't neglect the centerpiece of your small office. Take some time this spring to refresh your computer.
• Update security features
Without proper security software, the critical data and information housed in your home office is vulnerable to external viruses and attacks. If you're running a small business, protecting your assets is paramount so invest in reliable and efficient security software. A tool like Norton 360 will defend your PC against a broad range of threats, so get up to speed on all your firewall, anti-virus and intrusion detection needs.
• De-clutter your desktop
Home office computers may be more apt to being overloaded with non-work related files and programs. Organize your desktop so the least necessary files such as photos, home videos and MP3s are categorized in separate folders. Also, remove or turn off unnecessary icons, like Messenger, which can really decelerate your system.
• Dust, wipe and spray
Appearance counts, so be sure to thoroughly clean your hardware. Using a static free brush, remove as much debris from the keyboard as possible, and lightly dust the top of any added PCI or graphics cards in the computer. Using a can of compressed air, spray every part of the system's interior, including corners, fan grids and partly enclosed areas.
